My Rating 5 Stars or Wooden Stakes
Bren Woodard’s not exactly the girl-next-door, but she could
be if people would quit pissing her off. Putting up a front with her tough
demeanor and vulgar talk, all Bren really wants to be is left alone and lead a
quiet adult life. Raised by an abusive Father and acquiescent Mother, she
learned a long time ago to take care of herself, and she proved just that by
killing her Father when she was only seventeen.
Look she had too....and anyone else who now steps in her
wake and causes her problems.
The same yard stick her Father beat her with is the same
stick he supposedly fell on while in a drunken stupor. No one questioned Bren
and no one ever mentioned the stick had been sharpened on one end. Seems the whole
town was glad to be rid of him too.
Wood....sharpened wood objects become an obsession of
Bren’s; hence the nickname Woody.
Steve, a co-worker, is the only person Bren befriends if you
could call it a friendship. However, for Steve, he’ll take whatever he can get
because he’s been in love with Bren since she first walked into the factory as
a new employee. Not good for Steve. His feelings to protect her drag him into
her vigilante lifestyle.
As I was reading, I compared Bren with my favorite character
Hannibal Lector who also rid society of rude, destructive people. Don’t
cringe....there is no cannibalism....but there is blood and gore, and plenty of
action to keep you turning the pages. Oh yea, and sex.....Robin Renee Ray
included really good sex. If you like dark, horrific short stories, Hatred with
a Passion is a must read. My only grip is the book ended; I wanted more.
I’m excited to announce Robin is writing the second installment
in the Bren Woodard Series, tentative title: Weapons between the Sheets.
Because the horror has just begun.
